Rainbow Wahine Avoid Shut Out on Maui

Kapalua, Maui –The University of Hawai`i women’s tennis team fell today to the Stanford Cardinals, 6-1 at the Kapalua Tennis Garden’s on Maui. This is the first dual match for the Rainbow Wahine this year who are now 0-1 on the season.

In doubles play, Stanford won all three matches giving them a 1-0 lead to start the day. On the No. 2 doubles court Lauren Fitzgerald and Paige Mainor refused to let Stanford win their match so easily and fought for every point, eventually dropping the match, 8-2, to the Cardinal team of Alice Barnes and Amber Liu.

On the singles’ courts the Rainbow Wahine also failed to make a big impact, but did hold their own on the court, showing marked improvement in their skill and stamina. The squad gave up matches in positions one through five of the ladder. But it was in position No. 6 that the Rainbow Wahine came up with a victory. Freshman Kana Aikawa from the Northern Mariana Islands managed the team’s only victory against Jessica Leck, 6-4, 6-4.

“What the scores don’t show is how close the matches were today.” Said head coach Carolyn Katayama, “We managed to stay ahead in games but need to work on closing them out. They were doing the right things on the court and were executing skills as we did in practice. It made for very exciting matches.”
