LAS VEGAS – The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (31-1) defeated the Weber State Wildcats (7-20) 30-15, 28-30, 30-17 and 30-22 in the first night of the UNLV Thanksgiving Tournament at the Cox Pavilion Thursday.
Lily Kahumoku picked up another double-double with 16 kills and 11 digs while Maja Gustin and Lauren Duggins added 14 and 13 kills, respectively. Alicia Arnott came off the bench for a solid match, putting away eight kills, three aces and nine digs in place of Kim Willoughby, who sat the last two games due to illness.
Hawai`i jumped out with a 5-1 run to start game one before a Wildcat ace capped a WSU run that tied the game at five. Weber State kept it tied at 11-11, but UH responed with a 10-0 run on the hot serve of Duggins, taking a 21-11 lead. The Rainbow Wahine continued to roll as the took the first game, 30-15.
The teams kept it tight early in game two, as Weber State held a 17-15 lead. UH came back with a four-point run to take a 19-17 advantage. The Wildcats continued to fight their way back, tying the game at 25, 26 and 27 before taking the lead back at 28-27. Hawai`i got another point before the Wildcats put the second game away, as a kill by Lindsay Harris gave Weber State the 30-28 victory.
The Rainbow Wahine came out with a little bit of attitude in the third game, jumping out to a 6-1 lead, on three quick kills by Kahumoku, forcing a Wildcat timeout. Weber State was able to stay in it a little, but it wasn't enough as Kahumoku put away her … kill of the game to give UH the 30-17 win in game three.
The Wildcats took a 3-1 lead to start the fourth game. But Hawai`i looked as though they were ready to put the match away and get on to Thanksgiving dinner, as they jumped out to leads of 13-8 and 26-18 before taking game four, 30-22.
UH will play Kentucky tomorrow at 5 p.m. in their final regular season match at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas.
