HONOLULU - The Hawaii (7-4) football team gained a school-record 741 yards of total offense (198 rushing, 543 passing) in a 59-28 rout of Army (0-12) before 41,668 Saturday night at Aloha Stadium.
The win, Hawaii's seventh of the season, secured a birth in the Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl on Christmas Day for the second straight season. UH Athletics Director Herman Frazier accepted the formal invitation from Sheraton Hawai`i Bowl Executive Director Jim Donovan after the game.
Wide receiver Chad Owens hauled in a school-record 14 catches for 168 yards and a touchdown. It was the junior's third straight 100-yard game.
Freshman place-kicker Nolan Miranda, a walk-on, got the Warriors on the board first with a 32-yard field goal, the first of his collegiate career.
On the ensuing possession, Warrior quarterback Timmy Chang hit true freshman wide out Jason Rivers on an inside screen. Rivers broke several tackles, got a few blocks, and out ran three Army defenders for a 59-yard touchdown, the longest of his UH career. The rookie finished the game with a career-high 117 yards on five catches. Chang was 25-of-43 for 356 yards and two TDs.
One play later, senior cornerback Kelvin Millhouse intercepted Army's Zac Dahman and returned it 28 yards for a touchdown to put Hawai`i up, 17-0 with 5:17 left in the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, the Warriors took a 24-0 lead when Chang capped a 7-play, 71-yard drive with a 2-yard rushing touchdown, his first of the season and fourth of his career. The drive was highlighted by a 27-yard catch and run by running back Mike Bass.
The Black Knights managed to get on the board in the second when Brian Hill intercepted Chang and returned the ball 79-yards for a touchdown.
Warrior backup quarterback Jason Whieldon came off the bench in the second quarter and ended the game 16-of-17 for 178 yards and one TD passing. The senior from Orange, Calif., orchestrated a 7-play, 74-yard drive to put the Warriors up, 31-7, at the half.
The Warrior defense forced Army to punt on first three possessions and held the Black Knight offense out of the red zone until midway through the second quarter. Army threatened at the Warrior 1-yard line, but failed on a fourth-and-goal when Dahman fumbled while trying to go over the top and the Warriors recovered in the endzone for a touchback.
The Army defense intercepted Chang three times in the game and managed 14 points in the second quarter, but it wasn't enough to deny Hawaii from keeping an unblemished 5-0 record at Aloha Stadium.
The Warrior offensive line completed their second perfect game of the season, not allowing a sack in 61 pass attempts. Meanwhile, the Warrior defense recorded three sacks, two interceptions (Abraham Elimimian and Kelvin Millhouse), and two forced fumbles.
Next week, the Warriors meet Alabama Nov. 29 at Aloha Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:45 p.m. and will be aired nationally on ESPN.
