Warriors Down George Mason in Three

HONOLULU - The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team swept George Mason (30-25, 30-16, 30-19) in an exhibition match, the first of the Fall Preview Tour, Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Warriors got outstanding performances by sophomore middle blocker Maulia LaBarre, who ignited the crowd of about 300, with his hard hitting and crisp blocking. Freshman setter Brian Beckwith showcased his ability having to step in for injured starter Kimo Tuyay. The Warriors also played without starting outside hitter Jose Delgado who suffered a stress fracture in his back earlier in the week. Delano Thomas was also back in form with several thundering hits.

A total of 12 players will make the four-day island-hopper tour that continues tomorrow at the Hilo Civic Center on the Big Island, Friday at War Memorial Gym on Maui, and Saturday at Molokai High School. All matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The Warriors begin the official season Jan. 8, 2004 against Penn State in the Outrigger Invitational in Honolulu. The tournament field also includes Manitoba of Canada and Lewis University.
