Hawai`i and BYU Battle to 2-2 Draw

Box Score

HONOLULU--The University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine soccer team wrapped up its regular season schedule by playing nationally-ranked BYU to a 2-2 tie, Monday night at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium in a non-conference matchup. The Rainbow Wahine (13-4-2) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first half, but were unable to finish off the Cougars (12-4-2).

UH entered the match winless in three matches versus its former conference nemesis and seemed poised for an upset over the Cougars, ranked 16th by Soccer America. Super sophomore Natasha Kai scored a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes to give UH a 2-0 lead. It was Senior Night and outgoing players Arlene Devitt, Mia Moe and Robyn deHay all got in the act in their final home appearance. Moe and deHay provided the assists for Kai's first goal which saw the striker capitalize on a one-on-one opportunity against the goalie in the 17th minutes. The second goal came just four minutes later as Kai scored on a soaring header off a Devitt corner kick.

The Cougars quickly bounced back on a corner kick play of their own. All-American Aleisha Rose send a corner kick into the box that UH unsuccessfully cleared, resulting a one-timer by Brooke Thulin from 12 yards out. BYU got its second goal with just nine minutes left in regulation. Rose again was in on the play as her shot was blocked by UH goalkeeper Mahie Atay, but eventually converted into a goal by Jennifer Fielding who knocked in the rebound. The teams remained scoreless in the ensuing 20 minutes of overtime. It was UH's second overtime of the season, with both matches resulting in a tie. The Cougars out-shot the Rainbow Wahine 29-13 for the match, including 20-7 in the second half and overtime. UH's Atay finished with a season-high 11 saves, one shy of her career best.

With two goals versus the Cougars, the Rainbow Wahine notched yet another record with a total of 50 goals on the season.

Hawaii next plays in the WAC Tournament, Nov. 6-8 in Dallas, Texas. The Rainbow Wahine, the WAC regular season co-champions, are the second seed and with a first-round bye will play an opponent to be determined on Nov. 7.
