No. 2 Hawai`i Sweeps LSU in Willoughby's Homecoming

BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (22-1) swept the Louisiana State Tigers (9-12) 30-13, 30-23 and 30-22 in front of a crowd of 1,313 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, the sixth largest crowd to watch an LSU volleyball match.

Kim Willoughby led the way for the Rainbow Wahine, putting away 18 kills and 10 digs while hitting .517. Lauren Duggins had a match-high seven blocks and seven kills while Maja Gustin added seven kills. Nohealani Tano added nine kills for UH.

Hawai`i jumped out to a 6-2 lead early in game one before a big 5-2 run by LSU cut the deficit to 8-7. UH would respond quickly, taking a big 10-1 run to go up 18-8. The Rainbow Wahine would continue to roll, taking the first game 30-13. Hawai`i would hit .353 to the Tigers' -.079 in game one.

Louisiana State would start out the second game much better, breaking out to a 13-11 advantage. Hawai`i would respond with four straight points to take a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. UH would keep pushing as Willoughby would get a kill and a block to end game two 30-23.

The Tigers would go up 13-11 early in game three before a block by Duggins and Alicia Arnott capped a 4-1 run to give UH a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. The Rainbow Wahine continued to roll after the break, scoring four straight points, highlighted by two more Duggins blocks, to raise the Hawai`i lead to 18-14. UH would keep their lead around four points before they took the match with a 30-22 game three victory.

UH will now close out their southern road trip as they head to Tulsa, Okla., to play the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Saturday, Oct. 25, at 7 p.m.
