Rainbow Wahine Falter in Main Draw

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The two remaining University of Hawai'i singles and doubles teams lost their matches at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Western Regional Main Draw, Friday, at the Barnes Tennis Center.

Junior Lauren Fitzgerald was overwhelmed in her singles match, falling to USC’s Bernadette Bayani, 6-0, 6-4. Newcomer Sylvia Jaros had match point in the second set against Arizona’s Iza Ferreira but came up short, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4. Both dropped to the consolation bracket, Saturday.

“Lauren played well, she started to use the strategy and worked the points in the second set,” head coach Carolyn Katayama said. “Sylvia had more of a chance, but being inexperienced, she played some loose points that set the tone for her opponent to come back. Both played well and had their chances.”

The doubles team of Fitzgerald and Mainor fell to the second-seeded team of Katalina Romero and Indra Erichsen of host San Diego State, 8-3. Jaros and Kana Aikawa dropped their match to UCLA’s Shilpa Joshi and Anya Loncaric, 8-2.
