Box Score Box Score

HONOLULU - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (19-1, 7-0 WAC) extended their WAC winning streak to 72 matches with a sweep of WAC Eastern Division-leading Southern Methodist Mustangs (15-5, 6-1 WAC) 30-25, 30-19 and 30-18 in front of a crowd of 8,436 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday.

Kim Willoughby led the way for the Rainbow Wahine, recording 17 kills, seven digs and two aces. Lauren Duggins ended the match with eight kills, four digs, two aces and four blocks while Maja Gustin hit .412 with seven kills and five blocks. Susanne Boogaard continued her solid play with five kills and a .500 hitting percentage in one and a half games, taking over for Lily Kahumoku, who notched 10 digs, three kills and two blocks before resting the final one and a half games. Kanoe Kamana`o added a solid all-around match with 31 assists, two kills, seven digs and five blocks.

SMU showed right away that they would be a force to be reckoned with, blocking Willoughby for the first point of the match to open up game one 5-1. The Mustangs pushed their lead to 10-6 before a 5-0 run, capped by a block by Willoughby and Gustin, gave Hawai`i their first lead at 11-10. But the Rainbow Wahine would be in for a fight as SMU took a 15-14 lead at the media timeout. Southern Methodist would get their lead to 20-18 before a crucial 7-0 run put UH up 25-20. Hawai`i continued to roll, as a kill by Nohealani Tano ended the first game 30-25.

The Mustangs again jumped out in game two, taking an early 8-4 lead. SMU held a 10-7 advantage before a 6-0 run on Duggins' serve gave the Rainbow Wahine the lead at 13-10. Hawai`i then reeled off a 9-1 run to go up 23-13 before taking the second game 30-19.

The Rainbow Wahine would start out a little better in the third game, opening up to a 6-2 advantage. Hawai`i would raise their lead to 22-7 and 25-8 before eventually taking the third game 30-18.

UH will next play Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 5 p.m. in a non-conference match. The Wildcats won two Pac-10 matches already this weekend, and were ranked in the top 10 earlier in the season.
