No. 2 Hawai`i Rolls WAC Winning Streak to 70 with Sweep at UTEP

EL PASO, Texas - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (17-1, 5-0 WAC) swept the UTEP Miners (5-15, 0-6 WAC) 30-16, 30-19 and 30-20 in front of a crowd of 1,200 at the Memorial Gym Saturday.

Lily Kahumoku led the way again in Willoughby's absense, putting away 16 kills, 11 digs and four blocks while hitting .429. Susanne Boogaard had a career-match, notching nine kills and no errors for a .563 hitting percentage. Maja Gustin hit .857 with six kills, while Lauren Duggins had eight kills and five blocks. Nohealani Tano provided seven kills, four digs, three blocks and a .500 hitting percentage while Melissa Villaroman finished with 11 digs and just her second kill of the season.

After starting out game one 4-3, Hawai`i reeled off five straight points on the serve of Gustin, putting them up 9-3. The Miners wouldn't let UH get too far away as the Rainbow Wahine held a 15-9 lead at the first timeout. But Hawai`i would start to pull away, going up by as much as 25-12 before taking the first game, 30-16.

UTEP would jump out to a 5-3 lead in game two before a 4-1 run gave UH the lead at 7-6. Hawai`i would start to seperate themselves from the Miners, taking a 15-11 lead at the media timeout. The Rainbow Wahine would then pull away, winning game two 30-19.

Hawai`i came out to a 5-0 lead in game three on three quick blocks. The Rainbow Wahine kept up their domination throughout the game, taking leads of 12-3, 16-6 and 20-8 before taking game three 30-20.

UH will head back to Honolulu tomorrow morning before starting a three-match weekend at the Stan Sheriff Center next weekend. It will all start with Louisiana Tech on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m., before hosting Southern Methodist, who is undefeated in WAC play, at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18. The Rainbow Wahine will then venture out of conference to face the Arizona Wildcats at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19.
