HONOLULU -- The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (11-0, 1-0 WAC) defeated the Rice Owls (8-7, 0-1) 30-19, 30-13 and 30-20 in front of a crowd of 7,090 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.
Kim Willoughby led the way for Hawai`i with 23 kills and 13 digs while hitting a season-high .625. Lily Kahumoku added 18 kills and a .351 hitting percentage while Lauren Duggins had seven kills, five digs and two blocks.
Rice played close with the Rainbow Wahine, holding a 9-7 lead. But Hawai`i came storming back on the strength of seven straight Duggins serves before cruising to the 30-19 win in game one.
Game two saw Hedder Ilustre serve nine straight points including three aces to put UH up 14-4 early. Willoughby added a strong serve with an ace of her own, extending the lead to 22-8 before taking the second game 30-13.
Hawai`i kept the pressure on in game three, as Karin Lundqvist served six points to give UH their biggest lead at 26-14. From there it was academic as the Rainbow Wahine went on to take the match with a 30-20 win in game three.
Hawai`i will have the rest of the weekend off before preparing for Louisiana Tech on Saturday, Oct. 5.
