The University of Hawai‘i women’s golf team finished the first round of the Pioneer Highlands Ranch Intercollegiate in seventh place after a round of 332. The Rainbow Wahine are just five strokes behind Wyoming heading into tomorrow’s final round.
Freshman Tara Chappell paced the Hawai‘i effort with a round of 79 that put her in a tie for 21st. Senior Bobbie Arakawa was just two strokes back in a tie for 27th, after a round of 81. Junior Megan McGuinness added a round of 85 to the team total, which put her in a tie for 35th. Freshmen Andrea Souza and Kari Sur both made their collegiate debut, finishing with round of 87 and 89 respectively.
Iowa State leads the tournament after a round of 295, putting them six shots ahead of host Denver. The Cyclones’ Leanne Owens leads the tournament thanks to a 71, the only round under par on the day.
The final 18-holes of the 36-hole event will be played tomorrow with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
