The University of Hawai`i Warrior golf team opened up their 2002 campaign at the Pacific Invitational, shooting a total of 604 on the first day to place 14th.
The Warriors struggled in their first round at The Reserve in Stocton, Calif., shooting a 305, before coming back in the afternoon with a 299. Newcomer James Beston led the team in his debut with Hawai‘i, putting together rounds of 75 and 71 to finish the day in a tie for 44th. Junior Matt Kodama was one shot back with a 147 total, putting him in a tie for 49th.
UCLA took control of the team competition, shooting a total of 557 to take a six shot lead over Coastal Carolina heading into the final round. Chris Gilley of Long Beach State shot back-to-back 68s to take a one shot lead into Tuesday’s round.
