HONOLULU -- The No. 4 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (2-0) defeated the No. 21 Colorado Buffs (0-3) 30-18, 30-21, 30-22 in front of a crowd of 7,123 at the Stan Sheriff Center Sunday.
Hawai`i was led by the All-American duo of Kim Willoughby and Lily Kahumoku. Willoughby had 12 kills and a team-high 13 digs, while Kahumoku led the Rainbow Wahine with 13 kills while hitting .344. Maja Gustin also came up big for UH, adding 10 kills, four blocks and a .588 hitting percentage in just two games. Libero Melissa Villaroman added 12 digs from the back row.
The Rainbow Wahine started the match hot, jumping out to 5-0 and 10-2 leads early. From there, they just traded points with the Buffs, taking the first game 30-18.
Head Coach Dave Shoji shuffled the lineup a little in the second game, starting freshman Susie Boogaard on the right, Maja Gustin in the middle and Hedder Ilustre at libero. UH steadily built up their lead, taking the second game 30-21.
The third game was more of the same as Hawai`i took it 30-22.
Monique Gerlach led the charge for the Buffs with 12 kills, while setter Elizabeth Gower added six kills, 32 assists and 13 digs.
Hawai`i will next face UCLA for the Classic championship on Monday, Aug. 2 at 5 p.m. in the Stan Sheriff Center.
