LOS ANGELES - Sophomore utility Chelsea Garner Prohs scored two of Hawaii’s four goals but it wasn’t enough to rally the University of Hawaii women’s water polo team past fourth-seeded California as the Bears took it, 6-4, on day two of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at McDonald’s Swim Stadium on the USC campus.
The Rainbow Wahine led it, 2-1, after the first period, but trailed 3-2 at the break. The Bears then outscored Hawaii 3-2 in the second half and 10 saves by goalie Lauren Dennis to prevent the upset. Hawaii (14-14) also got goals from senior utility Karin van Hoff and sophomore driver Erin Kocher.
Hawaii will meet the loser of the San Jose State vs. San Diego State match to be played later this afternoon. The teams will be playing for seventh place in the MPSF Tournament at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time.
