KAHUKU, HI - The University of Hawaii men's golf team is in ninth place after Wednesday's first round of the Western Athletic Conference Golf Championships at the Turtle Bay Resort Fazio Course.
Hawaii shot a 301 team score, 24 strokes off leader Tulsa, which shot a 277 on the day. Three Warriors shot a three-over 75 including senior Norman Ganin-Asao, junior Jaime Matsumura, and freshman Kellen-Floyd Asao. Sophomore Matt Kodama followed with a 76, while junior Kramer Aoki finished at 80.
"We struggled, especially on the backside on holes 13 through 17," Warrior Head Coach Ronn Miyashiro said. "We had a lot of chances to make birdies on the green, but didn't convert. The good news is that there are two more days left to recover."
Tulsa's David Inglis shot a nine-under 63 to capture the lead, Louisiana Tech's Jay Caserta is four strokes back at 67, and five others shot 69. SMU (283), Fresno State (285), UTEP (288), and Louisiana Tech (292) rounded out the top five in team competition.
The WAC Championships continue tomorrow and Friday. Shotgun start at scheduled for 7 a.m.
