HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i softball team dropped its third-straight Western Athletic Conference game to Fresno State this afternoon, 4-1. The second game was halted due to rain. The second game is tentatively rescheduled for Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m.
In the opener, the Bulldogs scored single runs in each of the first two frames to provide Jamie Southern (28-6) with enough run-support.
In the first inning, UH's Sheri Oronoz (17-10) got the first batter out but then was singled to death as the following three batters - Pam Perez, Lindsay Fossatti, and Southern - had singles to load the bases.
Then Julie Selbicky reached on a fielder's choice as UH second baseman Natalie Gonzales tried to throw home after making a stop on a tough hop. Oronoz got Lori Hoffman on a fielder's choice out as UH first baseman Stacey Porter made the throw home to get the lead runner, Fossatti. Then Leticia Pacheco grounded out to end the threat.
In the second inning for FSU, Pam West singled up the box, moved to second on Vanessa Czarnecki's sacrifice bunt, advanced to third on Tiffany Whipple sharp single to center, and scored on Perez's single to right.
FSU added single runs in the fifth and seventh innings on errors.
Hawai`i's lone run came in the seventh on Kate Judd's leadoff solo shot, her 11th of the season.
Hawai`i falls to 29-20 and 10-5 in the WAC while Fresno State improved to 41-13 and 12-1.
