Hawaii Tops San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, CA - The 11th-ranked University of Hawaii women’s water polo team upset sixth-ranked San Diego State, 11-10, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Thursday at Bud Kerns Pool.

Senior utility Karin van Hoff scored a career-high seven goals, three in the first, one in the third and three in the fourth, to help the Wahine snap a three-match losing streak.The seven goals was second-best in school history and the first by a Hawaii player since 1998.

Hawaii (11-11, 5-5 MPSF) and San Diego State (14-11, 5-6 MPSF) were tied at five at the half and at seven after three periods of play. Sophomore utility Chelsea Garner-Prohs scored her second goal of the match to put the Rainbow Wahine ahead for good seconds into the fourth period. The Aztecs scored a goal with 24 seconds left in the match to keep it close.

The Rainbow Wahine wrap-up the MPSF season Friday at USC and will play in The Beach Invitational Saturday and Sunday before returning home.
