HONOLULU - Hawai`i's
Sheri Oronoz tossed a one-hit shutout and got some help from right fielder
Denise Dahlberg at the plate to lead the Rainbow Wahine over New Mexico State, 4-0, at the Chevron Malihini Softball Tournament at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium tonight.
Oronoz (9-4), who took a no-hitter into the seventh inning, struckout five and walked two. She got the leadoff batter, Kelly Rhnye to ground out before Jodi Spino hit a sharp grounder between short and third and into left field for the Aggies only hit.
Following a 40-minute rain delay in the top of the fourth, UH then broke the ice with a 3-run fourth. Stacie Hirano led off with a triple down the right field line and scored the game's first run on a passed ball. Then NMSU's Anita Knight (4-14) walked both Kate Judd and Stacey Porter. After a fielder's choice by April Crowell, both Porter and Crowell moved up on Trisha Ramos' sacrifice bunt. Both runners came home on the infield single up the middle by Dahlberg.
Hawai`i improves to 15-10 overall while New Mexico State falls to 10-18. The tournament runs through Sunday with UH hosting Oregon State and Loyola Marymount tomorrow night.
