HONOLULU - The ninth-ranked University of Hawaii women’s water polo team fell, 6-4, to 12-ranked UC San Diego in the final match of the Rainbow Challenge Saturday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

The loss put Hawaii (10-10) in third place, while UC Davis (17-9) claimed second. UC San Diego, which posted a perfect 4-0 record, took home the first-place trophy. UC Irvine and Brown finished fourth and fifth respectively.

The tag-team play of Tritons Melissa Agee and Brittany Russell proved too much for the Rainbow Wahine as both players scored three goals each to account for all the Triton scoring. Hawaii struggled on offense, an trailed 3-1 at the half.

The Rainbow Wahine offense came alive to spark a late charge in the fourth period when Chelsea Garner-Prohs tossed a hard skip into the goal coming out of a Hawaii timeout. One possession and less than a minute later, Tessa Curti found the net to bring the Rainbow Wahine within two at 5-3. But Agee scored her third goal with 2:43 remaining to seal the victory for the Tritons.

It was the second meeting between the teams which met in California on March 2. UH Interim Head Coach Cindy Rote managed to beat her alma mater, 8-7, in the first meeting.

Hawaii will take the week to prepare for second-ranked UCLA on April 6. Opening sprint is scheduled for 6 p.m. at The Duke.
