HONOLULU - The ninth-ranked University of Hawaii women’s water polo team fell, 5-2, to 12th-ranked UC San Diego at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex Saturday morning.

It was the first of four matches on the final day of the Rainbow Challenge. All the action happened early in the match. UC San Diego (14-8) scored three goals in the first period and it was all they needed. Hawaii’s senior utility Karin van Hoff scored two goals, both in the first period, but it wasn’t enough.

The Rainbow Wahine struggled on offense missing on 19 of 21 shot attempts mostly due to bad passing. UC San Diego players got kicked out seven times and Hawaii was also unable to take advantage of the six-on-five opportunities. UC San Diego, playing without head coach Larry Sanders who was ousted during yesterday’s match against UC Irvine, took just 14 shots on goal.

Hawaii (10-9) is 2-1 in the tournament, while UC San Diego is the only undefeated team at 3-0. UC Davis is 1-1, UC Irvine is 1-3, and Brown is 0-2.

The tournament concludes this afternoon with UC Davis taking on Brown at 11:30 a.m., UC San Diego against Brown at 4:30 p.m., followed by Hawaii vs. UC Davis at 6 p.m.
