Hawai`i Softball Splits at San Jose State, Suffers First WAC Defeat

SAN JOSE, CALIF. - The University of Hawai`i softball team split a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader today dropping the first game, 2-1, before rebounding and pounding the Spartans, 9-2, in the nightcap.

Hawai`i used a 14-hit attack in the second game to give Melissa Coogan (9-6) her ninth win of the season. She is now 4-0 in WAC play.

UH was led offensively by first baseman Stacey Porter who went 4-for-4 at the plate. Teammate Trisha Ramos also contributed a 3-for-3 effort. Kate Judd had a 2-for-3 game picking up two RBI on her 8th home run of the season.

In the first game of the day, UH's Sheri Oronoz (15-8) suffered the loss going all the way. She allowed only five hits, but the Spartans two run were enough.

UH got on the board in the first as Porter drove home Natalie Gonzales with an RBI single to right. That lead held up until the third.

That's when SJSU's Karlie Reiss singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, went to third on Tara Hall's infield hit, and both runners came home on Veronica Ramos' two-run double.

Hawai`i is now 26-16 overall and 7-1 in the WAC, while San Jose State is 14-30 and 2-6.
