HONOLULU - Chelsea Garner Prohs scored a career-high five goals to lead ninth-ranked Hawaii over UC Irvine, 11-5, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Thursday night at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
Hawaii (9-8, 4-4 MPSF) got out to a quick start on a goal by senior utility Karin van Hoff just 51 seconds into the match. UC Irvine (6-14, 1-5 MPSF) stormed back with two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead, but not for long.
The Rainbow Wahine defense took over in the second period and managed a 4-3 lead at halftime. The third quarter belonged to Garner-Prohs, the sophomore from Riverside, Calif., who scored two goals less than a minute in and added another with 10 seconds left in the period to boost Hawaii to a 7-4 lead heading into the final period.
Ta Molina helped the Rainbow Wahine pull away with a goal at the 4:40 mark and Garner Prohs added her fifth goal with 2:44 remaining before making her exit.
Hawaii got goals from seven different players to win its second straight match. The Rainbow Challenge continues Friday and Saturday. Hawaii will meet Brown Friday at 6 p.m. The tournament continues tomorrow according to the following schedule:
