TUCSON, ARIZ. - The University of Hawai`i dropped a 17-2 decision today to Long Beach State in a shortened game due to the 8-run rule at the UofA Hillenbrand Invitational.
LBSU (16-7), which has beaten Hawai`i (11-10) six times in this young season, scored five in the first and a 12-run third did in the Rainbow Wahine.
The 49ers Lindsay Knoff picked up the win going four innings, while Melissa Backstrom tossed the final frame. UH's Melissa Coogan (4-4) suffered the loss as Shannon Tabion (1.2 innings) and Paula Blanning (0.1 inning) finished off the game.
Long Beach State collected 16 hits in the game as Jessica Smith went 3-for-3 with four RBI and teammate Nicole Spencer was 3-for-3 with five RBI.
Hawai`i's two runs came in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Stacey Porter, her seventh of the season.
UH final game in the tournament is Sunday at 6 a.m. HST against Eastern Michigan.
