Hawai`i Outlasts Southern Mississippi, 3-2

TUCSON, ARIZ. - If took two hours and 40 minutes, but when the dust cleared, the University of Hawai`i had edged Southern Mississippi, 3-2, in the second day of the UofA Hillenbrand Invitational.

Southern Mississippi (8-9) got on the board in the first with two runs as Amanda Brown led off with a single to left, advanced to second on Melanie Hymel's sacrifice bunt, stole third, and scored on Jennifer Tandarich's errant throw. Tammy Edwards followed with a solo homer to right center.

Hawai`i responded in their half of the first to tie the game at two apiece as Stacie Hirano walked after one out. Then Kate Judd powered a two-run home run to center field.

That's the way it stood until the 10th inning when UH placed Hirano on second base as part of the international tie-breaker. She scored on Judd's double to deep center to end the marathon.

UH's Sheri Oronoz (6-4) went the distance for her eighth complete game of the season. The Eagles' Jessica Holaway suffered the loss.

UH plays Long Beach State later today, a team that has beaten UH five times already this season. UH wraps up the tournament with a 6 a.m. HST game Sunday against Eastern Michigan.
