HONOLULU -- The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (2-3) defeated the Sacramento State Hornets (0-1) 6-3 in the first game of a three game series between the two in front of 2,284 at the Les Murakami Stadium.
Junior Bryan Lee picked up the win for Hawai`i, going 7 and two thirds innings, giving up just two earned runs. He struck out four and walked one, while giving up just six hits. Lee also retired 12 straight batters between the second and fifth inning.
The Rainbows took the lead in the fifth inning when Scooter Martines hit a triple that scored three runners, putting Hawai`i up 4-1. From there the Rainbows never looked back. The Hornets were able to cut the lead to one in the eighth inning on an unearned run, but the 'Bows picked up two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win.
Martines' triple led the Rainbow offense as he went 1-for-1 with three walks. Cortland Wilson hit 2-for-4 with one RBI, one run scored and a double. Brent Cook also hit 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Chris Kinsey provided much of the offense for the Hornets as the sophomore hit two solo home runs in the first and seventh innings. Senior Kevin Marzion picked up the loss for Sacramento State.
The two teams will go at it again tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. They will then complete the series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, Feb. 10. Tomorrows pitchers are penciled in as Aaron Pribble for Hawai`i and Marshall Plouffe for Sacramento State.
