PROVO, Utah - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (29-1) defeated the Brigham Young Cougars (14-18) 30-23, 30-19 and 30-17 in front of a crowd of 813 at the Smith Fieldhouse.
Kim Willoughby led the way for Hawai`i with 20 kills, five aces, eight digs and a .484 hitting percentage. Lauren Duggins added eight kills on just 13 attempts for a .615 hitting percentage while Lily Kahumoku had 11 kills and eight digs. Nohealani Tano had another good hitting match, hitting .500 with seven kills.
The two teams played tight early on in the game as UH took a 15-13 lead into the media timeout. The Rainbow Wahine continued to build up their lead as a great dig and block by Kahumoku put Hawai`i up 18-14 to force a BYU timeout. UH continued to roll out of the break, extending their lead to 22-15. The teams then traded mini-runs before the Rainbow Wahine took game one 30-23.
The Cougars went up early in game two 6-4, but a couple of Willoughby aces gave UH their first lead of the game at 7-6. The Rainbow Wahine kept rolling adding a few more points to take a 15-11 lead into the media timeout. They continued to keep the lead, getting it up to 20-12 on the tough serve of Willoughby before taking the second game 30-19 on a Susie Boogaard kill. Duggins hit an amazing 6-of-7 as the team hit .625 in game two.
Game three was again close early on with BYU going up 3-2 before Hawai`i went on a 5-0 run to take a 7-3 lead. The Rainbow Wahine kept rolling, taking leads of 15-6 and 20-12 before taking the third game 30-17.
Hawai`i will next play the No. 24 Utah Utes tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Salt Lake City. If the Rainbow Wahine wins, it will give Shoji his 800th win of his career.
