HONOLULU - Six players scored in double figures as the University of Hawai`i men's basketball captured the Hawaiian Airlines Tip-Off Tournament, with a 100-81 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sunday night, at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Tournament Most Valuable Player Haim Shimonovich scored a team-high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting and grabbed five rebounds. Junior guard Carl English added 17 points with the help of four 3-pointers. Junior forward Phil Martin chipped in with 15 points and was a near-perfect, 6-of-7 shooting from the field.
Reserve guards Jason Carter and Michael Kuebler came off the bench to score 12 points a piece. Vaidotas Peciukas added 12 points and point guard Mark Campbell dished out nine assists.
The Rainbow Warriors shot a blistering 60 percent from the field, while connecting on 10-of-19 3-pointers. UH hit the century mark for the first time in two seasons.
English and Kuebler were also named to the all-tournament team. Joining them were Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Brian Evans and Travis Bailey and Arkansas-Little Rock's Jibrahn Ike.
In the third place game, Arkansas-Little Rock defeated Cal State Fullerton, 56-43. Ike scored a game-high 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
The Rainbow Warriors take the next two weeks off before facing off against intra-state rival UH-Hilo, Dec. 9 in an exhibition game at the Stan Sheriff Center.
