No. 2 Hawai`i Runs Game Winning Streak to 48 with Sweep of Boise State

BOISE, Idaho - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (21-0, 9-0 Western Athletic Conference) defeated the Boise State Broncos (1-20, 0-9 WAC) 30-15, 30-14 and 30-18 in front of a crowd of 648 at the Bronco Gym Saturday.

Maja Gustin had a solid match, knocking in six kills on just eight attempts in two games played, while also adding three blocks. Kim Willoughby led the way for UH with 17 kills and a .467 hitting percentage while Lily Kahumoku added 10 kills and 10 digs. Freshman Susie Boogaard had a good match hitting .417 with six kills, four digs and two blocks. Lauren Duggins also played well with eight kills and four blocks, while Melody Eckmier had three kills and four blocks. Senior Jennifer Carey also played well at the net with four blocks and 22 assists.

The Broncos kept it close early on, holding the UH lead to 8-7. But Hawai`i then went on a run, extending their lead to 13-7. The Rainbow Wahine kept it going, getting their lead up to 24-12, forcing Boise State head coach Scott Sandel to call a timeout. Boise State continued to fight, getting it as close as 26-14 before Hawai`i took game one by the score of 30-15. Kahumoku led the way for UH with six kills while Gustin had a good start with two blocks.

Hawai`i jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second game, then continued to pour it on, getting their lead up to 12-3. UH ended up taking the game 30-14. The Rainbow Wahine hit .414 to the Bronco's -.250 in the game. Gustin hit a perfect 4-for-4 in the second game.

The Rainbows again jumped out early, going up 6-1. But the Broncos came out of the timeout and reeled off three straight points to cut the lead to 6-4. Duggins then stepped up with two kills leading UH to a 4-0 run to go up 10-4. Both teams then traded mini-rallies, as Hawai`i ended up taking the third game 30-18 on another Duggins kill. Hawai`i outhit the Broncos .408 to -.037 on the match while outblocking them 12-3.

UH will now head home for their final three home matches of the season. They'll start with rematches against Nevada and Boise State on Friday, Nov. 8 and Saturday, Nov. 9, before hosting the defending national champion Stanford Cardinal on Sunday, Nov. 10. The Sunday match will start at 6 p.m. with the other two matches starting at 7 p.m.
