HONOLULU - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (12-0, 2-0 WAC) defeated the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (12-8, 0-2 WAC) 30-15, 30-19 and 30-16 in front of a crowd of 7,567 at the Stan Sheriff Center Saturday night.
Lily Kahumoku led the way for Hawai`i with 15 kills, seven digs and a .467 hitting percentage. Lauren Duggins added eight kills, six blocks, three digs and a .389 hitting percentage while Kim Willoughby had nine kills, five aces, six digs and three blocks in just two games played. Nohea Tano also had six kills and a .500 hitting percentage on the night.
In the first game, UH jumped out 6-1 and never really looked back. Kahumoku hit an outstanding .875 with seven kills on eight attempts in game one, leading the team to the 30-15 win.
Louisiana Tech kept it tight in the second game, cutting the UH lead to 9-8 early on. But Kahumoku served six straight points to put the Rainbow Wahine up 19-10 before a Willoughby and Duggins block gave Hawai`i the second game 30-19.
Hawai`i continued to roll in the third game as they were able to change up their lineup, playing Susie Boogaard on the left, Melody Eckmier in the middle, while subbing in red-shirt freshmen Ashley Watanabe and Megan O'Brian. UH took the third game 30-16 on a Louisiana Tech service error.
Hawai`i will next play at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 13, in the Stan Sheriff Center, against Tulsa. The match will be part of this week's homecoming festivities for the university.
