No. 2 Rainbow Wahine Top Fresno State in Three

HONOLULU - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (19-0, 7-0 Western Athletic Conference) defeated the Fresno State Bulldogs (18-3, 6-2 WAC) 30-28, 30-17 and 30-26 in front of a crowd of 7,555 at the Stan Sheriff Center Friday.

Lauren Duggins had an outstanding match for Hawai`i with 11 kills, eight digs and three blocks (two solo), while hitting a sizzling .714. Kim Willoughby led all players with 24 kills and 15 digs while Lily Kahumoku finished her strong week with 18 kills and 12 digs. Senior Jennifer Carey had her best match of the year, tallying 43 assists, nine digs, two aces and three blocks.

The Bulldogs started out the match looking primed for the upset, jumping out to a quick 8-4 lead in the first game. Hawai`i clawed their way back into the game, tying the score at 14. But Fresno State continued to build up a lead, holding a three point lead late at 26-23 before Willoughby and Kahumoku took over, getting six combined kills in a 7-2 run that gave UH the 30-28 victory in game one.

The Rainbows left little to question in the second game, jumping out 11-4 early. They continued to put on the pressure throughout, winning game two 30-17. In the game, UH hit .429 to Fresno State's .000.

Game three was another tight one as the lead never got higher than four points either way. But at 24-23, Hawai`i took over, ending the match, on a big block by Kahumoku and Karin Lundqvist, with a 30-26 win in game three.

The Rainbows will next head on the road for two WAC matches at Nevada on Friday, Nov. 1, and at Boise State on Saturday, Nov. 2.
