LAKESIDE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i Warrior golf team struggled in the first day of the Barona Collegiate Cup, posting a score of 599.
The Warriors were unable to improve on their opening round score of 296, as they carded a 303 in the afternoon round. Sophomore Ben Douglas experienced both the up and downs, as his opening 68 put him in the Top-10. However, the Australian from Brisbane, Queensland, faltered in the second round, finishing the day tied for 51st. Junior Manarii Gauthier finished tied for 59th after carding a 149 total.
Denver jumped out to the first day lead after posting a 559 total, just six strokes better than host San Diego State. Denver’s Shawn Willis is tied for the individual lead with Peter Tomasulo of California. Both players recorded nine-under-par totals of 135.
Hawai‘i still has one more day to make up some ground, as the tournament concludes tomorrow with the final round at the Barona Creek Golf Club.
