Hawai`i Has Dominant 30-6 Second Game En Route to Three-Game Sweep at SMU

DALLAS - The No. 2 University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine (15-0, 5-0 Western Athletic Conference) defeated the Southern Methodist Mustangs (8-12, 2-4 WAC) 30-24, 30-6 and 30-17 in front of 601 fans at the Moody Coliseum Saturday.

Kim Willoughby led the way for Hawai`i with 17 kills and 11 digs, while Lily Kahumoku had a near triple-double with 11 kills, 16 digs and seven blocks. Karin Lundqvist came up big at the net for UH with nine blocks, six kills and a .600 hitting percentage while fellow middle hitter Lauren Duggins hit .500 with eight blocks and eight kills. Freshman Susie Boogaard also contributed five blocks while Melissa Villaroman had a match-high 18 digs.

After a dogfight in the first game, in which UH won 30-24, Hawai`i had one of its most dominating performances to date, holding the Mustangs to six points in the second game. It was the lowest point total vs. Hawai`i in the rally scoring era and the biggest point differential in a game ever for UH. The Rainbow Wahine out-hit SMU .300 to -.016, out blocked them 17-5 and out-dug them 68 to 48.

The Rainbow Wahine now come home for two non-conference matches with Notre Dame on Monday, Oct. 21 and Tuesday, Oct. 22. The Oct. 21 match will be held at 7 p.m. with the Oct. 22 match at 6 p.m. Hawai`i will then have their toughest weekend in the WAC when they host San Jose State at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24 and Fresno State at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25. All matches will be played at the Stan Sheriff Center.
