Wahine Breeze Through Bearcats

HONOLULU -- The No. 10 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team rebounded from a Friday night loss to No. 6 USC with a 30-24, 30-22, 30-16 win over the University of Cincinnati Saturday afternoon. The Women of Troy then beat Utah State in the final match of the Aston's Imua Wahine Challenge to win the tournament with the Wahine finishing second. The matches were seen by 5,778 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Wahine were led by Kim Willoughby, who recorded match-highs in kills (22), digs (14) and blocks (six), while hitting a season-high .556. Along with the amazing effort by Willoughby, Hawai'i again had their steady input from Tanja Nikolic (11 kills), Maja Gustin (11 kills, .350 hitting percentage) and Lauren Duggins (eight kills, five blocks and .438 hitting percentage).

The Bearcats were able to stay close in the first game, holding seven ties including a tie at 16 before the Wahine went on a run and never Cincinnati within two points again, with Hawai'i taking the game at 30-24. Willoughby had an amazing 10 kills in the first game.

Hawai'i took control in the second game, holding a seven point lead on six occasions before extending the lead to eight, winning game 2, 30-22. From there the Wahine never looked back as they blitzed through Cincinnati in game 3, 30-16.

The Wahine will next host Loyola Marymount Friday night before old WAC rival BYU comes into town Saturday. Both matches will start at 7 p.m. and the two teams will play each other on Thursday, Sept. 13.
