Hawai‘i Sweeps Through Utah State

HONOLULU -- The No. 10 University of Hawai'i Wahine volleyball team (3-3) defeated the Utah State University Aggies (2-2) 30-23, 30-12 and 30-18 in the first night of the Aston's Imua Wahine Challenge. The match was played in front of 6,061 fans at the Stan Sheriff Center on the UH-Manoa campus.

Kim Willoughby again led Hawai'i with 18 kills and 11 digs, while hitting .389. Sophomore Lauren Duggins also came up big for the Wahine, scoring six kills, six blocks and 10 digs, while hitting .385.

Game 1 stayed tight for the first 13 points, as the Wahine were unable to push their lead beyond three points. But a 4-0 run lifted Hawai'i to take a 17-11 lead before finishing the game 30-23.

Hawai'i then stepped it up for game 2, taking leads at 12-5 and 18-9 before going on a 7-0 run to extend their lead to 25-10. From there on, the Wahine put it in cruise control, winning the game 30-12.

UH continued to dominate in game 3 as the Wahine were able to try out a couple of new players at new places, as Nohea Tano played some at the right-side hitter position while Maja Gustin moved back to the middle blocker position. Hawai'i again ran away with game 3

Hawai'i will now face the No. 6 USC Women of Troy Friday night at 7 p.m. in their second match of the Imua Challenge. USC won the first match Thursday against Cincinnati 30-19, 30-23 and 30-13. Cincinnati will first face Utah State in the 5 p.m. match.
