Ruston, La. -- The University of Hawai'i Wahine volleyball team (7-4, 1-0) defeated Louisiana Tech (6-7, 0-1) 30-18, 30-15 and 30-20 in their first conference match of the season at the Thomas Assembly Center.
The match was the first colligiate match for Hawai'i's Kim Willoughby in her home state of Louisiana, as many of the fans in attendance were there to support Willoughby's homecoming. The reigning National Player of the Week didn't disappoint the crowd, whacking 17 kills and 7 digs, while hitting .379. Maja Gustin also added 12 kills, while Jennifer Carey had her best performance as a hitter, getting four kills and four digs, while hitting .571.
The Wahine started out a little slowly, allowing the Lady Techsters to take an early game 1 lead at 5-4. But Hawai'i ten went on a big run, scoring seven straight points to go up 11-5. Then Hawai'i took control, taking the game 30-18. Tano went a perfect 4-for-4 on her attempts to finish game 1 with a 1.000 hitting percentage.
Hawai'i started out game 2 much better, coming out to a 9-2 lead before Louisiana Tech was able to reel off four straight points to cut the Wahine lead to three. UH then started to roll, taking game 2 30-15.
In the third game, Hawai'i was able to try many new players in new places en route to a 30-20 victory.
The Wahine will remain on the road as they play three matches next week, starting with a non-conference match with Houston on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7:30 p.m. CST. Hawai'i will then play at Rice on Wednesday, Oct. 4 and at Tulsa on Saturday, Oct. 6. Both of those matches will start at 7 p.m. CST.
