WAHINE SOCCER ENDS REGULAR-SEASON WITH 3-1 WIN OVER FRESNO STATE: Seniors Play Big Roles in Win

Box Score

HONOLULU – The Wahine soccer team followed the lead of their senior class of Veronica Flores, Carmel Hurley, Erin Schremser and Jennifer Starsiak–as they toppled Fresno State, 3-1, in their final Western Athletic Conference match and last regular-season contest of the year at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.

The Wahine got on the board at 17:13 when Jennifer Starsiak took a touched ball from fellow senior Veronica Flores, settled it, and fired-off a right-footed shot to the right of diving Fresno State keeper Mary-tyler Wahl from about 16-yards out.

The score increased Starsiak's school-record totals for points (45), and goals (18). The assist tied Flores for the team lead, with five, and also pushes her career total to 13, leaving her one shy of the school record for both season and career assists.

Hawai'i's outstanding left-side freshman tandem of Kristalynn Ontai and Joelle Sugai combined to produce the game-winner at 25:41. Ontai sent a ground pass to Sugai on the left flank, who slammed a left-footed shot over Wahl from about 30 yards out. The goal was the first of Sugai's Wahine career, while the assist was the third of the year for Ontai.

Senior Carmel Hurley, was pushed-up to striker from her customary defender spot in the second half and netted the game's final goal with a minute remaining when she took a pass at the center circle and dribbled over 50-yards toward goal, sprinting past a number of Bulldog defenders before sending a right-footed bullet under a diving Wahl. The goal was Hurley's third of the season and her career.

Senior Erin Schremser, making her final home, helped organize the Wahine defense, as they weathered 22 Fresno State shots to post the win.

The win was the third consecutive victory for the Wahine, as they closed the WAC season at 5-3-0, placing them second in conference. Hawai'i now awaits results from remaining WAC matches to learn their seeding for next week's league championship tournament in Dallas, Tex.
