The University of Hawai‘i Warrior tennis team remain winless after facing No. 2 Stanford, Friday afternoon, in the annual post-Thanksgiving matchup at the Mauna Lani Resort on the Big Island.
The Warriors were able to capture three victories over the Cardinal, but still fell short in the end, 5-2. Out of Stanford’s nine-man squad, five are nationally ranked in the top 100 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s preseason poll, however, only three of them competed in the match.
Scott Lipsky (No. 57), David Martin (No. 34), and Sam Warburg (tied for No. 100) won the No. 1, 2, and 3 positions from UH’s Reginaldo Moralejo, Malino Oda, and Jorge Gonzalez, respectively.
Newcomer junior Justin Menolascino managed to capture his second straight victory as a warrior against Stanford’s Phil Shang, 7-5, 7-5. Menolascino, a transfer from Division II Truman State University, competed the last two matches with a sprained left (non-dominant) wrist. However, the injury was not a factor as he moved up one position in the lineup from No. 5 to No. 4.
Senior captain Lincoln Leeder lost the first set to Joe Kao, 1-6 but tied up the series by winning the second set, 7-5, resulting in a deciding third match. Leeder came away with the victory by winning the 10-point tie breaker, 10-4.
In doubles competition, Leeder and Oda faced off against Lipsky and Martin in the No. 1 position but fell, 8-3. The Stanford duo is also ranked by the ITA in doubles at No. 2.
Gonzalez and Ohuchi managed to stop the Stanford sweep in doubles by edging out Kao and Morris in the No. 3 position, 8-6.
The Warrior will take on Chaminade and Hawai‘i Pacific, Friday, Nov. 30 as they defend their title in the annual City Intercollegiate Tournament at the UH Tennis Complex. Matches begin at 9 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2:30 p.m.
