Box Score Box Score

HILO, Hawai`i – Sophomore Phil Martin scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds as Hawai`i held off Wisconsin, 60-57, Sunday afternoon in the third place game of the Big Island Invitational Tournament at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Martin struggled in Saturday's semifinal loss to Colorado State, recording no points or rebounds. But against the Badgers, the 6-foot-8 forward came up big for the Rainbow Warriors (4-1). He scored 10 second half points playing in all 20 minutes of the period.

Sophomore Carl English led the `Bows in scoring (19 pts.) for the fifth consecutive game. He scored just five points in the second half, but all came in crunch time. A driving baseline lay-up with just under 1:00 to play, gave the `Bows a four point lead (55-51), the largest any team had up to that point in the second half. After Wisconsin cut the deficit to two on a Travon Davis lay-up in the lane, English found a streaking Mark Campbell to give UH back the four point cushion.

The lead changed hands seven times and was tied twice in the second half. Hawai`i's largest lead of the game was seven (32-25), with a minute and a half to play in the first half. But the Badgers scored the final five points to trail by two at intermission.

For the game, the `Bows held Wisconsin to just 36.7 percent shooting, including a 9-of-27 performance in the second half. Hawai`i also found difficulty from the floor, shooting 40.9 percent after the half and missing all five 3-point attempts.

Hawai`i returns to Honolulu, where they will host Northwestern State, Tuesday, Nov. 27 in a non-conference game. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
