Josh Fouts

  • Title
    Assistant Coach
Josh Fouts begins his fifth season in charge of Hawai`i’s goalkeepers.  During his tenure, Fouts has groomed two all-Western Athletic Conference goalies and bolstered a record-breaking defense that has helped UH capture two conference championships in the last three years.

“Josh is one of the best goalkeeper coaches around,” head coach Pinsoom Tenzing said. “He brings technical expertise that boosts our goalkeepers to the top of their game.”

Fouts made an immediate impact in his first season, guiding freshman goalkeeper Mahie Atay to all-conference accolades. The standout goalkeeping continued through last year as Kori Lu set a freshman single-season record with nine wins en route to earning second-team all-WAC honors.

In Between, Fouts has helped UH goalkeepers shatter numerous records. In 2003, UH goalkeepers posted a school-best 11 shutouts, including a conference-record six in WAC action.  The very next year, the program set a single-season school record with a 0.87 goals against average. The Rainbow Wahine posted five straight shutouts during one stretch with the combined play of Atay and Erin Chow.  Atay completed an injury-shortened season with a 0.64 GAA, the best mark in program history, while Chow tied a school-record with five solo shutouts.

As a player, Fouts was a standout goalkeeper at Gonzaga University in Spokane Wash. The Hawai`i native earned second-team all-West Coast Conference honors three times and led the Bulldogs to back-to-back co-WCC titles in 1997 and ’98. Fouts capped his career by setting a record 0.83 career GAA and was named Gonzaga Bulldog Club Senior Male Athlete of the Year.  An academic all-WCC selection, Fouts graduated from GU in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in special education.

Fouts continued his career professionally with the Boston Bulldogs of the United States League A-League.  In 2000, he played for the Carolina Dynamo of the USL Third-Division League.

After his professional career, Fouts returned to Gonzaga and spent two years coaching both the men’s and women’s goalkeepers.  He received his master’s degree in behavioral analysis in June 2002. He is currently pursuing a doctorate degree in education at UH

Fouts, 28, is a 1995 graduate of Kalaheo High School in Kailua, O`ahu, where he lettered in football, soccer and volleyball.  He was a two-year starter at goalie for the Mustangs and earned first-team all-state honors his senior season.  Fouts also set a new league record with a 51-yard field goal versus Pearl City High School in 1994.
