A former three-year letterwinner for the 'Bows, Matt Johnson begins his sxth year with the Rainbow men's volleyball program.
Born in San Diego and raised in Honolulu, Johnson was an outside hitter for Hawai`i from 1992-94. He began his association with head coach Mike Wilton in 1993, when Wilton took over the head coaching duties.
In his three seasons as a 'bow, Johnson was a part of two postseason teams (1992, '94). Originally recruited by former coach Alan Rosehill, his most successful season was his senior campaign when he hit .364 in 43 games.
In addition to assisting Wilton in all capacities, Johnson's immediate responsibilities include recruiting and coordinating the summer volleyball camp.
During the past five years in which Johnson has been an assistant, the 'Bows have compiled a 106-38 recrod and appeared in two NCAA Championships. Each year, Hawai`i has made it to the MPSF Tournament semi-finals.
Johnson is a 1989 graduate of Campbell High School on O`ahu. He enjoys working out, reading and playing beach volleyball in his spare time. Johnson also served as an assistant coach for the Iolani School's girls varsity volleyball team.
He is married, Shalis, and has a stepson, Austin. they reside in Laie, O`ahu.
