Freddy Smith enters his second season as a graduate assistant for coach Rich Hill’s staff in 2023, assisting with the infielders and hitters. Smith arrived at UH after spending two seasons at CSUN as the director of player development.

COACHING HIGHLIGHTS
  • Helped the UH offense post its best single-season totals since joining The Big West in home runs (32), RBIs (277), walks (210) and stolen bases (55) in his first year in Manoa.
  • The Rainbow Warriors also finished fifth in the conference in both batting average (.269) and on-base percentage (.370).
  • Spent the summer of 2022 as the head coach of the Willmar Stingers in the Northwoods League, leading them to a 50-20 record while leading the league in batting average (.282), slugging (.422), doubles (135), and runs per game (7.7).
  • As Director of Player Development at CSUN, Smith helped the Matadors post a 31-24 overall record including going 10-5 in the shortened 2020 season.
  • Spent two seasons as the infield and hitting coach in the Northwoods League for the Waterloo Bucks, where he helped them go 70-38, including a Northwoods League Championship in 2020.
  • As a hitting coach for the Bucks, they were first in batting average (.277), OBP (.388), and runs per game (6.9) in 2021

PLAYING HIGHLIGHTS
  • As a player, Smith joined the Matadors as a junior college transfer and played in all 110 games for the Matadors from 2016-17, batting .291 with 134 hits, 65 runs, 48 RBI, 5 home runs, and 22 doubles to go with a .970 fielding percentage
  • In his junior season with the Matadors, Smith occupied the leadoff spot as he finished second in the Big West in hits with 75 while he led the team in batting average (.314). Smith was especially difficult to strikeout during the year as he only struck out 22 times in 239 at bats. He began the season in impressive fashion, hitting safely in the first 21 games.
