SERIES INFORMATION
  • Vanderbilt wins the first meeting between the teams.
  • The teams will meet next year (2023) in Nashville.
 
VERSUS THE SEC
  • UH dropped to 3-10-1 all-time against current SEC teams, including a 3-6-1 record at home.
  • UH played an SEC team for the first time since losing at Florida in the 2008 season opener.
  • The last time UH hosted and defeated an SEC team was against Alabama in 2003 (37-29) at Aloha Stadium.
 
TEAM STREAKS/TRENDS  
  • UH lost a home opener for the first time since falling to No. 25 Washington (17-16) in 2014. UH had won seven straight home openers.
  • It was also UH’s first home loss to a Power 5 school since 2014, when it fell to Oregon State. UH had won its last three home games against Power 5 opponents, beating Arizona and Oregon State in 2019 and Colorado in 2015.
  • The loss also ended a string of seven straight non-conference home games wins. Its last loss came to Louisiana Tech in the 2018 Hawai‘i Bowl.

INDIVIDUAL STREAKS/TRENDS 
  • Timmy Chang lost in his debut as UH head coach. Seven out of 10 UH first-year coaches in the Division I era have dropped their opener, including six of the last seven.
  • Ilm Manning has started 48 of 50 career games and 15 straight games dating back to 2020.

TEAM NOTES
  • UH suffered its largest margin of defeat at home since falling to USC 62-7 in 1999.
  • Hawai’i is 63-38-5 (.618) all-time in season openers.
  • This marked the sixth time UH played in Week 0 and second time it hosted a Week 0 game. UH has a 3-3 mark in Week 0 games, including 1-1 at home.
  • UH made its 120th all-time appearances on national TV and owns a 29-89-2 (.248) record.
  • Hawai‘i has dropped six of its last seven national TV games dating back to last year.
  • Mike Wright’s 87-yard touchdown run in the third quarter was the second-longest run ever by a UH opponent. The record is an 89-yard run by Fresno State’s Bryson Sumlin in 2004.
  • Anfernne Orji returned a fumble for a Vanderbilt touchdown late in the first quarter. It marked the first time a UH opponent returned a fumble for a touchdown in six years (Lee Crosby, New Mexico, 46 yards, 2016)
  • Vanderbilt scored a second fumble return touchdown when CJ Taylor returned a UH fumble 14 yards in the third quarter.
 
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
  • Dedrick Parson scored UH’s first touchdown of the season on a 37-yard run. It was the ninth rushing touchdown of his UH career and the 37-yard run tied his career high.   
  • Joey Yellen made his UH debut to start the second half of the game. The Pitt transfer finished 10-of-20 for 89 yards.
  • Jonah Panoke racked up career highs in both receptions (7) and receiving yards (101).
  • Virdel Edwards II and Leonard Lee led UH in tackles with six each. It was a career-high for both.
  • Matthew Shipley nailed a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter. He’s now made 12 straight field goals from 40 yards and in, a streak dating back to last season.
  • A total of 13 players made their first career starts as Rainbow Warriors, five on offense and eight on defense: Dior Scott (WR), James Phillips (WR), Jordan Murray (TE), Stephen Bernal-Wendt (OG), Austin Hopp (OT); Mataio Soli (DE), Jonah Kahahawai-Welch (DL/LB), John Tuitupou (DL), Virdel Edwards II (CB), JoJo Forest (CB), Malik Hausman (S), Matagi Thompson (S), Leonard Lee.
