The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa Letterwinners Club was founded in 1997 by then Associate Athletics Director and former student-athlete Jim Donovan (Football, 1981-82) as a way for former student-athletes to serve as role models for the next generation of student-athletes.
Who are Letterwinners? As one of the many chapters of the alumni association across the UH system, there are no membership fees to become a Letterwinner. All former student-athletes (having played at least one year) and graduates of UH Mānoa who participated in one of the Athletic Department's 21 sanctioned sports are automatically Letterwinners.
MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the Letterwinners Club is to promote fellowship among past Letterwinners and to encourage loyalty, service, and pride in their alma mater. Additionally, the mission of the group is to support and assist former and current student-athletes.
MORE ABOUT THE LETTERWINNERS CLUB
Since its founding, the Club has assisted student-athletes in a variety of ways including the purchase of laptop computers, graduation stoles at every commencement ceremony at a pre-commencement reception with family and friends, and with the renovation of the Nagatani Academic Center whose purpose is to help insure that current student-athletes excel in the classroom.
In 2018, the Letterwinners Club also became a charter member of Pupukahi I Holomua philanthropic society, under the leadership of current Athletics Director David Matlin, with a gift of $25,000 to the UH Athletic Department. This group strives to support student-athlete success in academics, in competition, and in life. Areas supported have been cost of attendance, summer school tuition, and nutrition for student-athletes.
MENTORING AND RESOURCE OPPORTUNITIES
One key way to serve as role models and promote fellowship among Letterwinners and current student-athletes is through mentorship. Mentoring is important for the valuable knowledge and skills mentors (Letterwinners) can provide while connecting generations (current student-athletes).
The Letterwinners Club has joined up with the Athlete Network, a website created for Letterwinners to connect with current as well as former Rainbow Wahine and Warriors while providing different career resources no matter where they are in the world or in their life. This is the "Rainbow Connection."
