MPSF Tournament Semifinals Quotes

POST-MATCH QUOTES
MPSF Tournament Semifinals - Hawai‘i vs. BYU
Thursday, April 20, 2017
Walter Pyramid; Long Beach, Calif.

HAWAI’I HEAD COACH CHARLIE WADE

OVERALL STATEMENT
“Super proud of guys to just stay focused on the process.  I thought we played pretty good in the first set.  We got a little ahead of ourselves, a little rushed from the service line.  Six service errors in the first half of the first set.  We were playing good enough to defend, but we were missing too many serves.  Guys stayed true to the process and kept serving aggressive all night.  I think we finished the match with nine total.  So it was a really nice performance tonight from the service line.  And for us, that’s how were really built.  We have to keep pressure from the service line to set up our defense and we were pretty good tonight.”

ON WHAT THIS WINS MEANS FOR THE PROGRAM
“Well, it’s big.  For us, it’s one more step to qualify for the NCAA.  I think this team it good enough to win a national championship.  That’s certainly our goal.  We won’t qualify if we win the (MPSF) tournament that we’re playing in.  Winning the semifinals, gets us one step closer.”

SENIOR OUTSIDE HITER KUPONO FEY
ON TONIGHT’S PERFORMANCE
“It was great team work.  We’re all passing well and just wanted to stay aggressive.  We’ve been playing like this all year and we’ve been playing aggressive all year.  I’m not surprised by the performance our guys put tonight.”

ON THE MATCH ENVIRONMENT
“It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.  I’m so happy that we came out and played.  That’s what we played for, those tight sets.  That’s what coach prepared us for.  Everyone made big plays tonight and it’s just a huge win.”

ON GETTING SWEPT IN PROVO AND NOW TONIGHT
“It’s just a neutral court and we wanted to take it, being aggressive.  We went into their gym on our heels I guess you can say.  Today, we wanted to just attack.”

BYU SHAWN OLMSTEAD – OVERALL STATEMENT
“Congratulations to Hawai’I on advancing.  They put a lot of pressure on us from the service line I felt.  We just couldn’t get our team in system.  Our hitters had to battle through that.  They made good touches defensively and they were in some good spots and I think it started from there, the pressure from serving.  Yeah, congrats to them.  They deserve to advance in this moment and situation and they’ll get another chance to play.”

ON THE DIFFERNCE BETWEEN THE MATCHES TONIGHT AND IN PROVO
“I thought maybe we were a little better defensively.  I think we gotta look a little bit closer at that.  I thought we started some serves that we should kept in.  I’m sure we served much better at home.  Again, I don’t have the numbers for that match (in Provo) and you move on quickly as you can and get ready for your next opponent.  I’m certain we served a lot better at home than we did here and you know, they did as well.  Our passing was definitely not as good .  We didn’t stay in system at all in compared to when we’re at home.”

ON THE POSSIBLITY OF RECEIVING AN AT-LARGE BID TO THE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP
“I would love to keep on playing!  These guys wanna play.  They’ve put together a nice resume, but there are so many other factors and there are still teams still playing that I can’t control.  You can’t control what goes on from here on out.  Unfornatley, what we could control, is what we did tonight and it slipped away bit.  We sure hope to play.  Let that be said.  This team has been through so many obstacles, ups and downs, than any other team that I’ve coached in my entire career.  They’ve stayed pretty focus and they know that.”

OUTSIDE HITTER JAKE LANGLOIS
ON TONIGHT’S MATCH
“They (Hawai’i) were serving really well tonight and we had a hard time staying system like Shawn said.  I’m partially to blame on that because I’m one of the passers.  So, if we get a chance to play, we’ll just get back at practicing and more big jump serves coming our way.”

ON WHAT IT’S LIKE TO HAVE BEN PATCH BACK ON THE COURT
“It’s always to play with Ben.  He’s one of my good friends.  When he’s on the court, it lifts me up and when Tim’s also on the court that helps me out as well.”
