Gameday Storylines
  • UH is making its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance in program history (1989, ‘90, ;94. ‘96, ‘98, ‘16) and its first appearance since 1998.
  • It is just the second time that the Rainbow Wahine won the Big West Conference Tournament for the automatic NCAA bid.
  • Hawai’i is 1-6 all-time in the NCAA tournament. Their lone win came in the first round of the 1990 NCAA tournament against the host school Montana in Missoula, MT. UH won that opening round game, 83-78 in the first round of the West Regional. UH then lost to Stanford in the second round, 106-76.
  • Hawai’i has appeared in the post-season 14 total times--six in the NCAA and eight in the WNIT. UH has an all-time post-season record of 6-16 (5-11 in WNIT)
  • It is the second time in school history that both the University of Hawai‘i men’s and women’s basketball teams have both punched their tickets to the NCAA tournament in the same year. 1994 was the only other year that this has happened.
  • UH’s head coach Laura Beeman joins former UH head coach Vince Goo as the only two coaches to ever lead the Rainbow Wahine to the NCAA tournament in school history.
  • Hawa’i head coach Laura Beeman has led the Rainbow Wahine to the post-season all four years that she has been at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine squad--including three consecutive WNIT appearances and this year’s appearance in the NCAA’s.
  • Beeman has led UH to back-to-back 20+ win seasons for the first since Goo led the ‘Bows to over 20 wins three straight years from 2000-’02. Overall UH has hit the 20-win mark 15 times--11 under Goo; twice under Bill Nepfell (1985, ‘87) and twice under Beeman. Last year the ‘Bows won the Big West regular season crown with 23-9 overall record and 14-2 mark in conference. It was UH’s first 20-win season since 2002.
  • Hawai’i is 1-6 all-time against UCLA with the last meeting being played in Hilo, Hawai’i on Dec. 19, 2010.The Bruins, who were ranked No. 9 at the time, won that game, 72-44 a year before Beeman came on board.
  • After winning the Big West tournament, UH went home to Honolulu on March 13 to allow the players to go to class on Monday and Tuesday before leaving on Wednesday morning to come back to California.
