Late Homer Downs Baseball in Finale at No. 6 Oregon State

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Despite a strong pitching performance from freshman right-hander Brody Martin-Grudzielanek, the Hawai'i baseball team was edged by No. 6 Oregon State, 3-1, in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.

Martin-Grudzielanek was brilliant in his starting role, silencing a potent Oregon State offense for the majority of his outing. The freshman carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning and ultimately allowed just one run on a solitary hit over 6.1 innings of work, striking out four and walking two on 94 pitches.

The Rainbow Warriors struck first in the top of the second inning to give Martin-Grudzielanek early run support. After Jake Redding kept the inning alive with a two-out single to right field, Christian Hoffman laced an RBI double down the right-field line to bring Redding all the way around to score, establishing a 1-0 advantage.

The contest remained a tense 1-0 pitcher's duel until the bottom of the seventh inning, when Oregon State (33-9) finally broke through. After Martin-Grudzielanek hit Paul Vazquez with a pitch, Hawai'i turned to reliever Tsubasa Tomii from the bullpen. Nyan Hayes promptly greeted Tomii with a two-run home run to left field, vaulting the Beavers into a 2-1 lead.

Oregon State added a final insurance run in the eighth inning via a two-out RBI double to make it 3-1.

Hoffman paced the Hawai'i offense, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Redding also contributed a multi-hit performance by going 2-for-3 with a run scored. The loss was UH's first of the season when leading after six innings, dropping the 'Bows to 16-1 on the year when leading going into the final three frames.

Hawai'i will now return home to host Hawai'i Hilo in a midweek matchup on Wednesday at 6:35 p.m. HT.
