SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The No. 73 University of Hawai'i women's tennis team (5-6, 2-2 Big West) captured a gritty doubles point but could not withstand a singles surge from Cal Poly, falling 4-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Ronca Tennis Center.
The Rainbow Wahine opened the match with momentum, clinching a hard-fought doubles point. The duo of Grete Gull and Sophie Rachor earned a 7-5 win at the No. 1 spot, while Hannah Galindo and Makeilah Nepomuceno outlasted their opponents in a 7-6 (7-2) tiebreaker at the No. 2 position to give UH the early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, Hawai'i faced a stiff challenge as the Mustangs picked up quick wins at the No. 4 and No. 1 courts to pull ahead. However, the Rainbow Wahine showed plenty of fight in the middle of the lineup. UH's Nepomuceno evened the dual match at 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Jessica MacCallum at the No. 2 spot.
After Cal Poly reclaimed the lead following a result at No. 6, Galindo provided the highlight of the day for UH. After dropping a dominant opening set, Galindo roared back to defeat Alexandra Ozerets 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 3 court, tying the overall score at 3-3 and keeping Hawai'i's hopes alive.
The match came down to a marathon at the No. 5 flight. Allaire Berl battled through a grueling second-set tiebreaker to force a decider, but Cal Poly's Sarah MacCallum managed to edge out the final set to secure the win for the hosts.
The Rainbow Wahine continue Big West play this weekend as they travel to face UC Santa Barbara. First serve is scheduled for Saturday, April 4, at 8 a.m. HT.
