LONG BEACH, Calif. — Isaiah Magdaleno dominated on the mound and the offense erupted for a pair of big innings as the Hawai'i baseball team crushed Long Beach State, 11-1, Friday night at Blair Field.
The victory snapped a three-game conference losing streak and marked UH's first conference win of the season as it kicks off a six-game road trip.
Magdaleno (2-1) was elite throughout his six innings of work, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine. His only blemish came in the first inning when Long Beach State's Justin Evans hit a solo home run to left field, but Magdaleno responded by throwing up zeroes the rest of the way to earn his second win of the year.
The UH offense took control in the top of the second, sending 10 batters to the plate to score six runs. After loading the bases with three straight walks, Hawai'i capitalized on a fielder's choice and an RBI single by
Kamana Nahaku to take the lead.
Gabe Wright then delivered the knockout blow of the inning with a two-run triple down the right-field line, followed by a
Ben Zeigler-Namoa RBI double and a
Kody Watanabe sacrifice fly.
Hawai'i (10-7, 1-3 Big West) added insurance in the seventh inning with five more runs, highlighted by a
Tate Shimao three-run double to bust it open.
Garrett Greco and Zeigler-Namoa also delivered run-scoring singles in the inning to give UH the 10-run cushion.
Shimao led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a pair of doubles while Zeigler-Namoa went 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a walk. UH took advantage of free passes all night, working 10 walks while getting hit by three pitches. The Hawai'i bullpen finished the job for Magdaleno, as relievers
Grant Garman and Danny Valdez combined for three scoreless innings to preserve the blowout.
The Rainbow Warriors look to clinch the series tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. HT.
