HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (8-10) split their OUTRIGGER Classic doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hawai'i was edged out in the first gamr by Portland State, 5-4, but the 'Bows bounced back to defeat Mercyhurst, 7-5 in the tournament finale. Saturday marked UH's conclusion of their non-conference tournaments for 2026.
Portland State 5, Hawai'i 3
The Vikings scored first, recording a run in the second on an RBI single by Jolee Benson that scored Sherrel Nakoa-Chung from second.
Milan Ah Yat led off the bottom of the first with a solo shot over the centerfield fence. Ah Yat's homer tied the game at 1-1 and marked Ah Yat's second home of the season and the tourney.
Jamie McGaughey led off the third by blasting a bomb over the leftfield fence to see-saw ahead of Portland State, 2-1. For McGaughey it marked her team-leading fourth homer of the season.
Hawai'i added another run in the third. With runners at second and third,
Maycen Gibbs laid down a bunt that scored
Rhea Furtado from third to give UH a 3-1 lead.
Portland State tied the score at 3-3 on a two-run home run by Mia Martinez in the top of the fifth.
McGaughey drilled a double in the sixth that scored Furtado from second to give UH a 4-3 lead.
Portland State had a runner at first base, but a throw off a grounder to third to get the lead runner at second went awry which left runners at first an second. Both runners eventually scored on an RBI double by Martinez as the Vikings took a 5-4 lead from which UH was unable to rally back from.
Hawai'i's starting pitcher
Taryn Irimata (2-6) suffered the loss in a complete game effort. She allowed five runs on eight hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
PSU's starter Giselle Pantoja earned the complete game win, allowing four runs on five hits with five walks and four strikeouts.
Hawai'i 7, Mercyhurst 5
The final battle of the OUTRIGGER Classic between the Rainbow Wahine and the Lakers was a back-and-forth affair which the 'Bows finishing with the victory.
The Lakers took a 1-0 lead on a solo home run by Jazlynn Sanders in the top of the second.

Abby Sasaki looped a triple to right and then tied the score at 1-1 on a ground out by
Cierra Yamamoto in the bottom of the second.
The Lakers scored two runs to take a 3-1 lead after a two-RBI double by Emelie Pascual drove in both Ava Zubovic and Brynna King.
Hawai'i got one run back in the third on an RBI-double by Ah Yat that scored Murakami from second to trail the Lakers, 3-2.
UH scored a pair in the fourth to see-saw into the lead, 4-3. Yamamoto scored from first after a sacrifice bunt by
Maya Ichimura and two errors allowed Yamamoto to hustle across the plate. Later Ichimura scored on a groundout to short hit by Murakami.
A pair of RBI singles by the Lakers gave Mercyhurst a 5-4 lead in the top of the fifth.
But the 'Bows rallied to score two runs in the sixth. Yamamoto scored on a Furtado RBI-single and Gibbs laced a two-RBI double to the left-center gap that drove in both Ichimura and Furtado with what proved to be the winning runs.

Macy Brandl did not figure in the decision, but threw the first 2.1 innings to stat the game. She allowed three runs on four hits with a strikeout.
Hannah Pitts earned the win to even her record at 3-3 overall. Pitts threw the final 4.2 innings. She gave up two run on four hits with two strikeouts.
Mercyhurst's Bailey Canon took the loss in a complete game effort. She allowed seven runs on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Next up, the Rainbow Wahine open Big West action with a three-game road series at UC Davis. The 'Bows and Aggies square off in a doubleheader on Friday, March 6 beginning at 11:00 a.n. HT. The series concludes with a single game on Saturday, March 7th at 11:00 a.m. HT.
