PALM DESERT, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished in a tie for 14
th place after Wednesday's final round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club.
The Rainbow Warriors carded a 299 to finish with an 882 total and tied with Big West rival UC Irvine. Among the seven Big West schools participating in the tournament, UH tied for third behind UC Santa Barbara (t-11
th, 868) and Cal Poly (13
th, 870).
Colorado easily defended its tournament title with a 34-under 830 total. Maryland (842) was runner-up followed by California Baptist (845), Oral Roberts (852), and Omaha (855). Maryland's Emil Riegger took medalist honors at 10-under 206 after a final round 67, which vaulted him six spots up the leaderboard.
UH's top finisher was
Dane Watanabe, who shot 1-under 71 to finish 2-over 218 and a tie for 46
th place. The junior from Kāne'ohe, O'ahu posted six birdies on his round, compared to only four total after his first two days.
Despite carding 78 on Wednesday,
Cameron Combado recorded his best 54-hole score as a Rainbow Warrior with a 222 total and tie for 68
th place. Fellow freshman
Alec Hilgers also tied for 68
th after a final round 76.
Nathan Szpakowicz rebounded from a disappointing opening round to finish +2 over his last 36 holes, which included a 74 on Wednesday for a 227 total and tie for 88
th place.
James Whitworth tied for 98
th at 230.
The Rainbow Warriors will next compete in the Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate, March 16-17 in Tucson, Ariz.
